Description

The crowned crane must be one of the most majestic and certainly regal birds in Africa. These birds are listed as Endangered due to the use of pesticides and loss of habitat.

Gorongosa is one of the great wildlife restoration projects. After years of civil war and poaching this area was left decimated. The government in partnership with the Carr foundation has been restoring this park to its former glory. Many animals have been translocated from other collaborative African parks, restoring the biodiversity of the past and creating opportunities for ecotourism to benefit the area.

The key to the success of this project has been the partnership with local communities surrounding the park, aiding them with educational, health and agricultural programs. As direct benefactors of the park and the economic opportunities it provides, the community becomes custodians of the land and create a vital buffer of agricultural land around its borders.

The thriving of species such as these cranes is a symbol of hope and inspiration for these projects.
