This female is part of the Western Pride of Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa. She was sleeping in the fading afternoon light. My four month old daughter was snuggled fast asleep in her car seat on her very first safari. We were watching the lions far off in the distance when my daughter awoke and began crying. This lioness stood bolt upright and walked with laser focused determination straight at our vehicle from over 100m away, hardly breaking her gaze. While I was happy with the resultant images, it was a sobering reminder of our fragility and vulnerability in the wild.
