Storms over Africa

Price range: $535.00 through $1,500.00

On the plains of the Greater Kruger National Park, lies an old leadwood tree, over a thousand years old. I wonder how many storms it has seen, how many leopards it has held in its arms, how many incredible scenes it has witnessed in the savannah below, and how many elephants backs it has scratched.

Description

Leadwood, as the name suggests is an extremely dense and heavy wood. It is one of the few woods which sinks being 60% heavier than water. It is extremely slow growing with the trunk thickening by only 0.3mm – 2mm per year. Leadwood trees can live for over a thousand years and it is estimated that they take a couple hundred years to decay as termites and other creatures battle to penetrate this hard wood. This Leadwood has been dead for the 31 years I have known it with hardly a change in its branches. It stands over the landscape as a silent witness and has seen this land as wild expanses, turned into cattle farms and reclaimed and restored back into wilderness areas as part of the Greater Kruger National Park.
