Description

Waterbucks have a very shaggy coat, especially for animals which live in such warm climates. This shaggy neck consists of hollow hairs which are thought to keep the waterbuck more buoyant when it enters water. It is also coated in an oily secretion from their sweat glands which repels water. This oil also has a very bad taste and smell which may aid in deterring predators. The thick coat may also prevent predators from gaining an easy grip on their necks. The shaggy coats make for very picturesque subjects, especially in cases such as this, where the first rays of morning light illuminate it from behind.
