Description
The Marsh pride of Savuti lives as the name suggests at the open marshes of Savuti, Botswana, in the heart of the Kalahari desert. It is fed by a channel of the Chobe river which flows inland here to create an Eden in the middle of the desert. This Savuti channel sometimes flows and is sometimes dry for years, hence the name Savuti (“mystery”). When this channel flows, Savuti has one of the largest concentrations of animals in Southern Africa and is truly breathtaking. In harsher times, very few animals are able to eke out an existence here.
The Marsh pride is known for quite incredibly preying on elephants, a harsh but incredible testament to the power of this pride. They do this in the harsh months, when the other game has left for greener pastures and the elephants are weak from the drought. The pride, more dispersed in good times, comes together in the tougher times to target these giants with all available resources .
This young male will be key in the years to come, aiding the pride with the male strength needed to tackle this prey. It’s a harsh and brutal reality for the elephants but equally a lifeline to the survival of this incredible pride.
